| 1. | Bob Dylan's first offical recording sessions.
|
| 2. | Only two songs are Bob Dylan compositions, most are covers of folk/blues
standards.
|
| 3. | The Beach Boys release their first album, SURIN' SAFARI. |
| 1. | Some earlier non-professional recordings have been released. See LIVE
1961-2000 Tracks 2 and 3.
|
| 2. | Bob Dylan had recorded professionally before these sessions, as a session
musican (see Talkin' New York.)
or using the pseudonym, Blind Boy Grunt.
|
| 3. | John Hammond was a highly repected producer of folk and blues records.
Negative reviews of the record accorded Bob Dylan the label, Hammond's
Folly.
|
| 4. | Apart from Song to Woody
(dedicated to his mentor, Woody Guthie), none of the cover songs are Guthrie
compositions. Bob Dylan's eulogy Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie
was printed in Writings and Drawings and a recording released on
BOOTLEG
SERIES VOL 1 -3.
|
| 5. | A large number of the tracks are first takes, most have no more than
three attempts. This brisk approach to recording (commonly criticised by
producers and critics) has been standard practice on the majority of Bob
Dylan's recordings.
|
| 6. | Although the majority of songs are standards, several are credited
by/arranged
by Bob Dylan. This use of publishing rights has also been standard
practice for Bob Dylan's recordings. There was some dissatifaction with
Dylan's use of Dave Von Ronks' arrangement for House
of the Rising Sun but crediting it to himself.
|
| 7. | The album's House of the Risin' Sun
was the inspiration for Allan Price's arrangement of the song for The Animals,
196?
|
| 8. | Total cost of the sessions has been reported as $402.
|
| 9. | The cap worn on the cover was an early prop, but was dropped after
it became standard folk singer issue. Despite the small sales of the album
it had a significant fashion influence - in the UK it was adopted by John
Lennon and Donovan (one of the original "new Bob Dylans").
|
| 10. | Bob Dylan would repeat the recording sessions thirty years later, with
the release of two albums of traditional/cover songs, the wounderfully
titled GOOD AS I'VE BEEN TO YOU, and
WORLD
GONE WRONG.
|
| 11. | Essentially the record shows little promise of the original work to follow, probably most restrained by the selection of traditional songs and the significant number of death songs.. An ambitious over-achievement for a 20 year old, the next release would redress any initial failure. |
